In the desolate Grasslands lives a mysterious sorceress, Thaleia (Saoirse Ronan), the last surviving daughter of Eminra, the original Emerald Witch — a figure from ancient Oz who wielded magic long before the Wizard arrived.

Thaleia discovers fragments of a forgotten prophecy:

“From emerald shadows shall rise
the witch who bends the wind.
Her legend green, her heart divided.
She alone can wake the One Beneath.”

The “One Beneath” refers to Ursa’Mara, a mythic spirit of primal earth long imprisoned under Oz — the force whose magic birthed the emeralds, the tornado pathways, and the strange living energy that pulses beneath the Yellow Brick Road.

Thaleia believes Elphaba’s survival triggered the prophecy.
She becomes obsessed with finding her — either to unite with her… or replace her.

Glinda’s Struggle, Elphaba’s Fear & Fiyero’s Sacrifice

Oz fractures into factions:

• Emerald Loyalists, who worship the monarchy

• Greenborn, rebels who claim Elphaba is their future

• Animal-rights societies, demanding restoration of speech

• Stormbringers, a cult devoted to Thaleia

Glinda tries to lead with grace, but the emerald storms worsen.
Her advisors warn her that keeping Elphaba alive is not just treason — it may be dangerous for Oz.

Meanwhile, Elphaba and Fiyero live in hiding.
She fears her magic, which grows unstable and unpredictable; he fears losing her again.
When Fiyero hears rumors of Thaleia hunting for her, he decides to sacrifice his anonymity and seek Glinda’s help — risking capture.

Their reunion in the Emerald City is emotional, raw, and laced with old wounds. Glinda confesses:

In a chaotic battle among collapsing towers, Fiyero shields Elphaba, nearly losing his life.
Glinda, torn between protecting the city and protecting her friend, casts a massive barrier spell — one that pushes her magic to its limit.

The Emerald City begins to fall.

The Final Choice — Legend or Life

In the ruins of the Emerald Throne, the prophecy unfolds:

Elphaba can:

1. Rise as the true Emerald Legend, merge with Ursa’Mara, and reshape Oz forever
   OR

2. Destroy the prophecy, break the ancient cycle, and free Oz from destiny — but lose her magic permanently

Thaleia begs her to choose power, to become a godlike savior.
Glinda begs her to save herself.
Fiyero begs her to choose the life they dreamed of.

Elphaba chooses love.
She destroys the prophecy in a spectacular blaze — severing her bond to magic, ending the Emerald Witch bloodline, and shutting Ursa’Mara back into the earth.

Thaleia, stripped of her magic, disappears into the wilderness — neither hero nor villain, but a witch searching for a new path.

The emerald storms vanish.
Animals regain permanent speech.
The land quiets.

Elphaba collapses — mortal at last.

The Emerald Legends — A New Oz

Spring returns to Oz for the first time in decades.

Glinda abdicates the throne, believing Oz must govern itself at last.
She establishes a new system of councils — and becomes Oz’s ambassador of peace.

Elphaba and Fiyero retreat to a quiet cottage at the edge of Munchkinland, living the simple life they were long denied. Citizens who once feared her now leave gifts at her door — not worship, not tribute, just thanks.

Oz tells stories of her deeds.
Songs are written.
Children celebrate “Emerald Day.”
Statues rise — not of a wicked witch, but of a woman who chose love over power.

And in the final scene, Glinda visits Elphaba on a gentle evening.

They sit under blooming trees.
They laugh.

They hold hands like they did once, in Shiz.
