“Full Metal Jacket,” directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a stark and harrowing exploration of the Vietnam War, divided into two distinct parts.
The first half, set in a Marine Corps boot camp, is dominated by the fierce presence of R. Lee Ermey as the relentless Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, and the transformation of Private Pyle, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, from an inept recruit to a broken man.
