Solaris (1972)

“Solaris” (1972) is a Soviet science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, based on the novel by Stanisław Lem. The film stars Donatas Banionis as Kris Kelvin, a psychologist sent to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris.

The space station’s crew experienced strange phenomena, with manifestations of their repressed memories and deepest fears appearing in physical form. As Kelvin investigates, he encounters images of himself, including a recurring image of his late wife, Hari (played by Natalya Bondarchuk), forcing him to confront his past and nature of human consciousness.

“Solaris” delves into profound themes such as memory, grief and the limitations of human understanding. Known for its philosophical depth, slow pace, and atmospheric imagery, the film contrasts human emotions with the vast, mysterious universe.

Tarkovsky’s adaptation is celebrated for its introspective approach, exploring existential questions and the complexities of the human psychology within a science fiction setting.
