“The Girl with All the Gifts” (2016) is a British post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film directed by Colm McCarthy and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by M.R. Carey. The film stars Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close, and Paddy Considine.
Set in a dystopian future, the film follows a young girl named Melanie (played by Sennia Nanua), who is one of a group of children held in a military research facility. These children are infected with a fungal pathogen that turns people into “Hungries,” zombie-like creatures driven by an insatiable hunger for human flesh. However, Melanie and the other children exhibit unique traits: while they are infected, they are not fully turned and retain their intelligence and self-control.
The story unfolds as the facility is overrun by the Hungries, forcing Melanie, her teacher Miss Justineau (Gemma Arterton), scientist Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close), and Sergeant Parks (Paddy Considine) to escape. As they journey through a desolate and dangerous landscape, they must confront both external threats and internal conflicts, as Melanie’s nature raises questions about the future of humanity and the ethics of using her as part of a potential cure for the infection.
