Scott Dixon, a driver for Chip Ganassi Racing, recently broke a long-standing IndyCar record previously held by motorsport legend Mario Andretti. At the latest Indy 500, Dixon made his 408th career start in IndyCar, surpassing Andretti’s record of 407 career starts. This milestone marks Dixon’s remarkable longevity and consistency in America’s premier open-wheel racing series, where he has competed since 2001 and earned six drivers’ championships.

To honor this achievement, IndyCar presented Dixon with special memorabilia from the Indy 500. The organization also shared a heartfelt post showing Dixon receiving the prestigious green flag at the 109th Indy 500, symbolizing his record-breaking 408th start in the series.

Mario Andretti, one of the most iconic figures in motorsports with a legendary career that includes four IndyCar championships, 52 victories, 141 podiums, 65 pole positions, a 1978 Formula 1 World Championship, and a 1969 Indy 500 win, congratulated Dixon on breaking his record. Andretti expressed his respect and good humor about the record being surpassed, saying, “Congratulations! You are just breaking another one of my records (laughs). But this is a good thing. Records are made to be broken, and no better than a champion like yourself.” He acknowledged the dedication required to reach such a milestone and praised Dixon as a continuing force in the sport.

At 44 years old, Dixon remains competitive, currently sitting seventh in the 2025 IndyCar drivers’ standings with 10 rounds left in the season. He is also just one championship shy of tying AJ Foyt’s record of seven IndyCar titles, underscoring his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
