Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR), a prominent team in the IndyCar series, has announced the passing of one of its original and most valued team members, Ed Delporte. The veteran electronics engineer died on June 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ed Delporte’s Legacy at ECR
Ed Delporte was among the very first employees of Ed Carpenter Racing when the team entered the American open-wheel racing scene in 2011. He served as an electronics engineer and was instrumental in the team’s participation in numerous Indy 500 events, the home race for ECR.

The team shared the sad news on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our teammate Ed Delporte. After a long and brave battle with pancreatic cancer, Ed passed away the morning of June 3, 2025.
Ed was one of Ed Carpenter Racing’s original employees and has been with the team since its first race. Not only was he a talented electronics engineer, he was a tremendous teammate and an integral part of our ECR family. A true historian of the sport, he attended 13 Indianapolis 500s before working 30. This year was his 31st and we are honored he was able to help us prepare for one more 500. Rest easy, Ed.”
A Pillar in the Garage
Delporte was a constant presence in the ECR garage. However, as his illness progressed, the 54-year-old became less visible on the pit wall. In a show of solidarity during the recent Indy 500, ECR fielded three cars with special cancer-themed stickers to support Delporte’s fight against the disease.
Outpouring of Support from the IndyCar Community
The news of Delporte’s passing has deeply affected the IndyCar paddock, prompting heartfelt tributes from teams across the series:

“Thinking of the entire ECR family ” -
Chip Ganassi Racing posted:
“Sending our thoughts & prayers to the ECR team and his family during this difficult time ” -

Delporte played a significant role in all six of ECR’s race victories since the team’s inception. His expertise and dedication were crucial to the team’s growth and success in the highly competitive IndyCar series.
Looking Ahead
As tributes continue to pour in, Ed Carpenter Racing has not yet announced who will take over Delporte’s responsibilities within the team.
