Kevin Harvick Opens Up About Early Career Struggles and Financial Hardships

In a candid conversation on the latest episode of the “Happy Hour” podcast, NASCAR veteran Kevin Harvick revealed some of the significant challenges he faced early in his racing career, particularly around the time he was exiting a contract with a Truck Series team.

The Difficult Contract Buyout and Financial Strain

Harvick, who later became a NASCAR Cup Series champion, shared that in the late 1990s, he had invested much of his savings into purchasing a new home. At the same time, he had hastily signed a three-year deal with Liberty Racing, a #98 Truck Series team. Unfortunately, this contract turned out to be a “bad deal,” and when Harvick wanted to move on, he found himself in a difficult position.

He explained that Richard Childress Racing (RCR), where he was running part-time in the Xfinity Series, did not assist him in buying out his contract with Liberty Racing. As a result, Harvick had to personally raise $200,000 to terminate the agreement. This financial burden forced him to take out a second mortgage on his house and rely heavily on his wife DeLana’s credit cards for about six months.

Harvick recalled:

“Well, Richard wouldn’t buy me out of my contract, and basically I needed to come up with another $200,000 to buy myself out of my contract. So I had to go take a second on my house. And we lived off of Delena’s credit cards for, like, six months. My manager, who’s still with me — Fred — had to loan me the money to get through Daytona so that I could start collecting a paycheck. So I had to pay the $200,000 back, and Fred and Delena were onthe hook.

This period was a tough time for Harvick, but with the support of his wife DeLana and his manager Fred, he managed to overcome the financial hurdles and continue his racing career.
