Charles Oliveira recently expressed doubts that the UFC will see another “golden generation” in the lightweight division like the one filled with stars such as Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and himself. Oliveira believes the impact and level of talent among these lightweights was unmatched and doubts the UFC will see a similar era of elite fighters and huge personalities at 155 pounds.

“With all due respect, the lightweight division has been exceptional,” Oliveira said. “There are giants here. It’s been an honor to be a part of this, competing alongside such names… and I don’t think we’ll get another crop of fighters at this level. The sheer talent and charisma of these fighters have made it truly remarkable.”
However, Oliveira may be overlooking another prominent name who’s recently joined the division: former featherweight champion Max Holloway. After his recent loss to Ilia Topuria, Holloway announced his decision to move up to lightweight, eager to test himself and pursue UFC gold at 155 pounds. Tired of the weight cut to 145, Holloway is looking forward to the challenges the lightweight division has to offer, with a title shot potentially within reach.

The lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who has dominated the top five of the division, could prove to be Holloway’s main target. But before that, Makhachev has a tough test coming up in January.

Islam vs. Arman II Set for Jan. 18 at UFC 311, this will be Makhachev’s fourth title defense. His opponent, Arman Tsarukyan, was one of the toughest challenges he has faced (apart from his lone loss to Adriano Martins at UFC 192). Tsarukyan shares a similar style with Makhachev but is known for his more advanced striking.

While Makhachev showcased his improved striking in recent wins against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 and Alexander Volkanovski, Tsarukyan will be the first well-rounded grappler and wrestler he’s faced since he won the title from Oliveira.
Oliveira, who has competed against both fighters, slightly favors Makhachev in this matchup. “These two must be careful with each other’s strengths, both in striking and grappling… but I think Islam has the edge,” Oliveira said.
As for Oliveira himself, he’s preparing for his own high-stakes rematch against Michael Chandler on Nov. 16 at UFC 309.
