Jacob Smith was taken aback by Rodtang’s strength during their first encounter back in 2022, realizing just how formidable ‘The Iron Man’ truly is. Now, with a massive world title fight for the ONE flyweight Muay Thai crown on the horizon, Smith is ready for redemption. Originally scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, the highly anticipated rematch is set to unfold at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on November 8.
After losing to Rodtang the first time, Smith recognized the need to elevate his training and performance to compete at that elite level. Reflecting on their previous bout, he admitted, “He was just one step ahead, sometimes two steps ahead of me all the time. That prevented me from letting off or doing what I’d normally do.”
Despite the challenge, Smith has proven to be one of the few fighters able to match Rodtang’s relentless pace and aggression. He showed his resilience by absorbing some of Rodtang’s most powerful knockout punches. If Smith has indeed evolved as a fighter as he claims, he could emerge as a new champion in 2024.
“I’m not accepting another loss against ‘The Iron Man,’” declared Smith. As a father of two, his journey with ONE Championship has been nothing short of incredible. Through wins, losses, and injuries, he continues to rise above his challenges, supported by a strong team at the gym.
With boxing trainer John Gillies in his corner, the 32-year-old Brit is confident that Rodtang will face a new version of him that he hasn’t encountered before. Fight fans have rallied behind Smith, expressing their support on social media after he shared a training session with Gillies on his Instagram.
One fan expressed their excitement, saying, “Lookin’ ripped there, kid. Big @johngillies123 got you in shape…. Jacob, really think about this as it’s achievable and it’s your #DESTINY.”
ONE 169: Malykhin vs. Reug Reug is now set to take place at Lumpinee Stadium on November 8 due to partner obligations, and the anticipation for this title fight continues to grow
