“IT’S HIS FAULT” Helmut Marko blames Lewis’ departure for Red Bull risking losing Max Verstappen to Mercedes
Helmut Marko commented on Lewis Hamilton’s move from Mercedes to Ferrari, noting that while it might be “exciting” to see how it plays out, the decision has led to the loss of an “important” figure in Enrico Cardile.
– Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari, as announced in a brief press release, shocked the motorsport world.
– Hamilton described leaving Mercedes, where he achieved six World titles over 12 years, as “one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make” but expressed excitement about the new challenge.
– Speculation about Hamilton’s reasons for leaving Mercedes sparked considerable debate among pundits and fans. Marko referred to a “fascination with Ferrari” when discussing Hamilton’s move.
“This is the best thing that could have happened to Formula 1 at the moment. Hamilton has lost faith in Mercedes.”
– For the first eight rounds of the season, it appeared that Hamilton made the right decision by joining Ferrari, winning two races and being just 23 points behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship after Charles Leclerc’s victory in Monaco.
– However, after Monaco, Ferrari’s performance declined, despite achieving two podiums since then. It was also the weekend Mercedes introduced their new flexi wing, which marked a turning point for the W15.
– Mercedes went on a six-race podium streak following Monaco, including three race wins. With their strong development and on-track gains, if both teams continue their trajectories, Mercedes could overtake Ferrari for third place in the Constructors’ Championship.
– This situation raises the question of whether Hamilton regrets his decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari.
“I can’t say,” Marko told OE24. “That will be exciting.”
“Ferrari has lost an important man in chassis boss Cardile,” Marko continued.
“Let’s wait and see what happens with Adrian Newey (the outgoing designer of all Red Bull world champion cars, ed.). He has some top offers, including from England, and can decide where he goes.”
