The Intouchables (2011)

The Intouchables (2011) is a French comedy-drama film directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. Based on a true story, the film is both heartwarming and humorous, exploring the unlikely friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic man and his caregiver from the projects. It stars François Cluzet as Philippe, a wealthy aristocrat, and Omar Sy as Driss, a young man from the suburbs who becomes his caregiver.
The film follows Philippe, a wealthy man who has been left paralyzed from the neck down after a paragliding accident. In need of a live-in caregiver, he interviews many highly qualified applicants. However, he is drawn to Driss, a charismatic but irresponsible young man from the poor suburbs, who has applied for the job only to get a signature to prove he was rejected in order to continue receiving unemployment benefits. Despite Driss’s lack of experience, Philippe hires him, intrigued by his irreverent attitude and lack of pity toward his condition.
As Driss starts working for Philippe, the two form a close bond, with Driss bringing laughter, excitement, and a new perspective to Philippe’s life. In return, Philippe introduces Driss to a world of art, culture, and responsibility. Their contrasting backgrounds lead to many comedic moments, but more importantly, they help each other grow and challenge societal expectations.
