X and Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, are facing daily fines of up to $1 million in Brazil due to allegations of legal violations. The Brazilian Supreme Court has set the fine at up to 5 million reals, approximately $920,000 per day, and Starlink—SpaceX’s satellite internet service—will also be held jointly responsible.

In late August, Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered X to be suspended in Brazil, finding that the platform violated local laws requiring social media companies to hire a legal representative in the country and to remove hostile speech. The court also concluded that X failed to suspend accounts accused of leaking personal information about federal officers.

Recently, X switched to using Cloudflare servers and appears to be employing dynamic IP addresses that continuously change to allow more users in Brazil to access the service. Previously, the company used static IP addresses, which were easily blocked by internet service providers following regulatory orders.

Musk has repeatedly criticized Justice de Moraes, comparing him to various villains. The new fines will begin accruing on September 19, based on the “days of non-compliance” with previous suspension orders. X has stated that they have no intention of restoring access for Brazilian users. Before the suspension, X had around 22 million users in Brazil, according to Data Reportal.
